Machu Picchu sits at 2,430 metres above sea level in the Peruvian cloud forest and was built by the Inca Empire in the fifteenth century. It was unknown to the outside world until 1911 and today remains the most spectacular archaeological site in the Americas.
Days One & Two: Lima and Cusco
Arrival in Lima and an overnight rest before flying to Cusco the following morning. Cusco itself is a UNESCO World Heritage city and the former capital of the Inca Empire. The afternoon is spent acclimatising to the altitude with a gentle walking tour of the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral and the Qorikancha sun temple.
Days Three & Four: Sacred Valley
The Sacred Valley of the Incas runs along the Urubamba River below Cusco. The tour visits the salt pans of Maras, the circular terracing of Moray, the market town of Pisac and the great fortress of Ollantaytambo, your overnight base before the train to Aguas Calientes.
Days Five & Six: Machu Picchu
An early bus ascends the switchbacks to the citadel gate as the mist lifts from the valley below. Your guide leads a two-hour exploration of the site covering the agricultural terraces, the Temple of the Sun and the Intihuatana stone. Afternoon free time allows you to explore independently. An optional Sun Gate hike rewards with a panoramic view of the citadel from above.
Day Seven: Return to Lima and Departure
Train back to Cusco, flight to Lima and international connection home.
