Sharjah holds the title of UNESCO World Book Capital and Arab Cultural Capital, and it takes those designations seriously. This full-day tour is built around the emirate’s extraordinary concentration of museums and restored heritage buildings.
Heart of Sharjah
The morning begins at the Heart of Sharjah, a long-running restoration project returning the old city centre to its early twentieth-century appearance. The lanes are lined with courtyard houses containing specialist museums covering calligraphy, Islamic civilisation, natural history and heritage.
Sharjah Art Museum and the Blue Souk
After lunch the afternoon is spent at the Sharjah Art Museum, which holds the largest collection of Arab art on public display in the world. The tour concludes at the Blue Souk, a twin-towered structure clad in blue mosaic tiles housing over six hundred shops selling antiques, carpets, jewellery and handicrafts.
