Central Europe

Prague, Vienna & Budapest Grand Tour

◷ 8 days / 7 nights ⌖ Central Europe ★★★★★ Highly rated

The three capitals of Central Europe sit within a day’s train travel of each other and share a history intertwined through the Habsburg Empire, the Second World War and the fall of Communism. Each is architecturally distinct, culinarily rich and well worth more time than this tour allows — which is to say, you will want to return.

Days One & Two: Prague

The Czech capital has the best-preserved old town in Central Europe, largely because it was spared significant bombing in the Second World War. The Charles Bridge, the Astronomical Clock, Prague Castle and the Jewish Quarter of Josefov form the core of two full days with your guide.

Days Three & Four: Vienna

A four-hour train delivers you to the Habsburg capital. Schönbrunn Palace and the Belvedere (home to Klimt’s The Kiss), the Vienna State Opera, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Naschmarkt food market structure two Viennese days. A concert of Viennese classical music in a baroque palace hall on the second evening is included.

Days Five, Six & Seven: Budapest

Three hours by train and you cross into Hungary. Budapest is bisected by the Danube into Buda and Pest, linked by the Chain Bridge. The Parliament Building, Buda Castle, Fishermen’s Bastion and the Jewish Great Synagogue — the second largest in the world — together tell the story of a city that has been at the centre of European history for a thousand years. A thermal bath evening at Széchenyi completes the Budapest experience.

Day Eight: Departure from Budapest
