Jordan — Petra, Wadi Rum & the Dead Sea

◷ 5 days / 4 nights ⌖ Jordan ★★★★★ Highly rated

Jordan packs an astonishing density of world-class experiences into a very manageable itinerary. Petra — the rose-red Nabataean city carved from cliff faces two thousand years ago — is justifiably one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Wadi Rum is a Mars-like landscape of rust-red sandstone and silence. The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth and one of the most therapeutic landscapes imaginable.

Day One: Amman

Arrival at Queen Alia International Airport and transfer to Amman. A walking tour of downtown Amman covers the Roman Theatre, the Citadel and its Umayyad Palace, and the first-century Temple of Hercules. The Rainbow Street neighbourhood for dinner gives an immediate sense of the city’s relaxed, café-culture character.

Days Two & Three: Petra

The three-hour drive south passes through the biblical Karak Castle before descending into the sandstone landscape of Wadi Musa. The Siq — a kilometre-long natural cleft in the rock barely wide enough for two camels abreast — delivers you to the Treasury, Petra’s most photographed facade. A full day allows the Treasury, the Street of Facades, the High Place of Sacrifice and the Monastery, a 45-minute uphill walk to a monument larger than the Treasury but visited by far fewer people. Petra by Night, when the Siq is lined with hundreds of candles, is available on the second evening.

Day Four: Wadi Rum

The protected desert wilderness of Wadi Rum was where Lawrence of Arabia based his desert campaign in 1917. A jeep tour with a Bedouin guide covers the red dune seas, sandstone arches, rock inscriptions and canyon passages. Overnight in a traditional Bedouin camp under a sky dense with stars.

Day Five: Dead Sea and Departure

The four-hour drive north to the Dead Sea. The water is so saline — ten times saltier than the ocean — that swimming is impossible in the conventional sense; you float on the surface without effort. Mud from the shores has been used as a skin treatment since antiquity. Transfer to Amman Airport for the return flight.
