Kenya & Tanzania Safari — The Great Migration

◷ 9 days / 8 nights ⌖ East Africa ★★★★★ Highly rated

The Great Migration is the largest overland movement of animals on earth — over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle circling between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya following the rains. To be present at a river crossing, when the herds plunge through crocodile-filled water, is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences available anywhere.

Days One & Two: Nairobi

Arrival in Nairobi and an overnight at a hotel within Nairobi National Park — one of the only national parks in the world set within a capital city. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre both operate morning visiting hours. A briefing dinner with your guide covers the safari protocols and what to expect over the following days.

Days Three, Four & Five: Masai Mara, Kenya

A morning flight from Wilson Airport delivers you directly to the Mara. Three full days of game drives in open 4WD vehicles with an expert Maasai guide who has tracked wildlife in this reserve for decades. Dawn and dusk drives cover different animal behaviours. A sundowner in the bush and a cultural visit to a Maasai boma village are both included.

Days Six, Seven & Eight: Serengeti, Tanzania

Crossing into Tanzania by light aircraft, the Serengeti extends across 14,763 square kilometres — the largest intact savanna ecosystem in the world. The Central Serengeti holds year-round wildlife density; the Western Corridor is where the river crossings happen between July and October. Your camp moves to follow the herds. Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcanic caldera containing the highest density of large mammals in Africa, closes the safari on day eight.

Day Nine: Departure from Kilimanjaro
