Japan is one of the world’s most consistently astonishing travel destinations — a country where ancient ritual and hyper-modern technology exist not in tension but in a kind of elegant parallel. The bullet train connecting Tokyo and Kyoto passes Mount Fuji at 320 kilometres per hour. The contrast between the two cities is the central theme of this nine-day journey.
Days One, Two & Three: Tokyo
Arrival at Narita and transfer by Narita Express to Shinjuku. Tokyo is too large to summarise in any itinerary, so the first three days focus on contrasts: the Shinjuku skyscraper district and the Meiji Shrine ancient forest, the Akihabara electronics quarter and the traditional craft galleries of Yanaka, the teamLab digital art installations and the Senso-ji temple at Asakusa at dawn. A sushi breakfast at the outer Tsukiji Market is included.
Day Four: Mount Fuji and Hakone
The Romancecar train from Shinjuku to Hakone passes through the Fuji Five Lakes region. The open-air museum at Hakone contains sculptures by Rodin and Henry Moore set against the mountain backdrop. On a clear day, the ryokan — traditional Japanese inn — room has a direct view of Fuji’s summit above the clouds.
Days Five, Six & Seven: Kyoto
The bullet train covers 500 kilometres in 140 minutes. Kyoto was Japan’s imperial capital for over a thousand years and contains seventeen UNESCO World Heritage monuments. The Fushimi Inari shrine’s ten thousand vermillion torii gates, the Arashiyama bamboo grove, the Kinkaku-ji Golden Pavilion and the geisha district of Gion form the itinerary core. A traditional tea ceremony is included.
Days Eight & Nine: Nara, Osaka and Departure
A half-day in Nara — the tame deer that roam free around the Tōdai-ji temple are unforgettable — before the afternoon in Osaka for street food at Dotonbori and a final evening of takoyaki and ramen before the departure flight.
