Swiss Alps, Lucerne & Interlaken

◷ 6 days / 5 nights ⌖ Switzerland ★★★★★ Highly rated

Switzerland packs an astonishing variety of alpine landscapes into a small country. The Bernese Oberland, the Matterhorn massif, Lake Lucerne and the Rhine Falls are within a few hours of each other, connected by one of the world’s most punctual railway networks.

Days One & Two: Zurich and Lucerne

Arrival at Zurich Airport and a direct train to Lucerne — the journey takes under an hour and already the mountains are visible. Lucerne is built around a lake and bisected by the Reuss river, which is spanned by the fourteenth-century Chapel Bridge. Day two takes the boat across Lake Lucerne to the base of Mount Rigi, ascending by cogwheel railway to a ridge at 1,797 metres for panoramic views.

Days Three & Four: Interlaken and the Jungfrau

Transfer by train to Interlaken, set between two lakes with the three giants — the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau — visible straight ahead. The Jungfraubahn cog railway ascends through the rock of the Eiger to the Jungfraujoch station at 3,454 metres, the highest railway station in Europe. Snow, ice sculptures and views into two countries on a clear day.

Days Five & Six: Zermatt and the Matterhorn

An entirely car-free mountain village, Zermatt is reached by a short electric train from Visp. The Matterhorn — 4,478 metres, the world’s most photographed mountain — commands every view. The Gornergrat railway climbs to 3,089 metres opposite the north face. Final departure from Geneva the following morning.
