Al Ain is the UAE’s only UNESCO World Heritage city and one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the Arabian Peninsula. Known as the Garden City for the dense palm plantations that have sustained it for millennia.
Al Ain Oasis and Al Jahili Fort
The Al Ain Oasis covers more than a thousand hectares and contains some 147,000 date palms still irrigated by the ancient falaj channel system. Al Jahili Fort, built in 1891, contains a permanent exhibition dedicated to the explorer Wilfred Thesiger who crossed the Empty Quarter twice in the late 1940s using Al Ain as his base.
Jebel Hafeet
The road to the summit climbs through 60 switchbacks to 1,240 metres with views across Al Ain and the Oman border. The mountain harbours ancient Bronze Age tombs on its lower slopes dating to around 3,000 BCE. The drive back passes the Green Mubazzarah thermal spring park at the base of the mountain.
