Morocco sits at the intersection of African, Arab and Berber cultures, and that layering gives it a richness that is unusual even by the standards of North Africa. Medinas — the old walled city centres — have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Sahara reaches the Algerian border, and the Atlas Mountains run across the heart of the country.
Days One & Two: Marrakech
Arrival in Marrakech and a first afternoon in the Djemaa el-Fna, the main square that transforms from a market by day into a festival of storytellers, musicians and food stalls by night. Day two covers the Saadian Tombs, the Bahia Palace and the souks of the medina — leather, spices, lanterns and carpets laid out in colour-sorted lanes. The Majorelle Garden, restored by Yves Saint Laurent, closes the afternoon.
Day Three: High Atlas and Ait Benhaddou
The Tizi n’Tichka pass crosses the High Atlas at 2,260 metres. On the far side the landscape becomes the pre-Saharan south — palm-filled oases in otherwise bare valleys. Ait Benhaddou is a UNESCO-listed ksar (fortified village) built in clay and used as a filming location for Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
Days Four & Five: Merzouga and the Sahara
The Erg Chebbi sand dunes near Merzouga rise to 150 metres and are the most dramatic sand landscape in Morocco. Camel trekking to a luxury desert camp at sunset, a traditional Berber dinner under the stars and the extraordinary silence of the Sahara at night. Dawn from the dune crest before the heat builds.
Days Six & Seven: Fes
The medina of Fes el-Bali is the world’s largest car-free urban area and has been continuously inhabited since 859 CE. The Al-Qarawiyyin mosque and university — founded in 859, the oldest continuously operating university in the world — the Chouara tanneries and the medieval madrasas are the core of two intensive days with a guide.
Day Eight: Departure from Fes
