Egypt’s ancient civilization lasted three thousand years and left behind monuments so large and precisely constructed that they continue to confound modern engineers. The Nile, the river that made all of this possible, still flows between the same limestone cliffs it has always occupied, and the temples and tombs along its banks represent the greatest concentration of ancient monuments in the world.
Days One & Two: Cairo and the Pyramids
Arrival in Cairo and transfer to a hotel near the Giza Plateau. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, the only surviving structure from the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the Great Sphinx are visited with a licensed Egyptologist guide who can answer questions about the pyramid’s construction that no guide book adequately addresses. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square contains the world’s largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities including the complete treasure of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Islamic Cairo and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar close the second day.
Day Three: Fly to Luxor and Begin Nile Cruise
Morning flight from Cairo to Luxor. Embarkation on the Nile cruise boat — a floating hotel — and immediate departure upstream. The temples of Karnak and Luxor are visited in the afternoon before the boat continues south overnight.
Days Four & Five: Nile Cruise to Aswan
The Temple of Horus at Edfu, the largest and best preserved ancient temple in Egypt. The double temple of Kom Ombo dedicated simultaneously to Sobek the crocodile god and Horus the falcon. Arrival at Aswan and a felucca — the traditional Nile sailboat — around Elephantine Island at sunset.
Days Six & Seven: Aswan and Abu Simbel
The Philae Temple complex, originally built on an island now partially submerged by Lake Nasser, was dismantled stone by stone and reassembled on higher ground in the 1970s — one of the great engineering rescues in history. A flight to Abu Simbel sees the twin temples of Ramesses II, also relocated, cut directly into the cliff face. Return to Cairo by air and a final dinner in the city.
