Barcelona is one of Europe’s most visually distinctive cities. Antoni Gaudí’s organic buildings break every architectural convention, the food scene ranges from humble market stalls to Michelin-starred restaurants, and the beach is ten minutes from the Gothic Quarter on foot.
Days One & Two: Barcelona Architecture
The Sagrada Família — Gaudí’s unfinished masterpiece begun in 1882 and still under construction — sets the tone for day one. The following morning takes in Park Güell on the hillside above the city, followed by the Casa Batlló and Casa Milà on the Passeig de Gràcia. A tapas walking tour through the El Born neighbourhood wraps up the second evening.
Day Three: Gothic Quarter and the Waterfront
The Barri Gòtic contains Roman walls from the first century and a Cathedral begun in the thirteenth. La Boqueria market and the Picasso Museum are both within walking distance. The afternoon heads down to Barceloneta beach and the port Olympic marina.
Days Four & Five: Costa Brava
A private car heads north along the coast to the Costa Brava, a coastline of dramatic limestone headlands, hidden coves and crystal-clear water utterly unlike the crowded resort coastlines further south. The medieval walled town of Besalú, the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres and a boat trip to a secluded cove near Begur round out the final days.
